Henry Purcell stands as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period and produced some of the best vocal music in English–a notoriously tricky language in which to write music.

In the lead-up to VOYCE Youth Opera’s performance season of Purcell’s brilliant Dido and Aeneas in July, let’s get to know some facts about this brilliant composer.

  1. Early Life: Henry Purcell was born in London, England, in 1659. He showed exceptional musical talent from a young age and came from a family of musicians.
  2. Chapel Royal Singer: Purcell began his musical career as a chorister at the Chapel Royal, where he received a solid musical education and developed his skills as a singer and composer.
  3. Versatility in Composition: Purcell composed in various musical forms, including sacred music, theatrical music, instrumental works, and vocal music. His versatility allowed him to excel in different genres.
  4. Dido and Aeneas: Purcell’s most famous opera is Dido and Aeneas. Composed around 1688, it tells the tragic love story of the Queen of Carthage, Dido, and the Trojan hero Aeneas. The opera contains the popular aria When I am laid in earth, also known as Dido’s Lament.
  5. Restoration Theater: Purcell was closely associated with the Restoration Theatre, composing music for numerous plays and semi-operas. His music played a significant role in the development of English Baroque theater.
  6. Keyboard Virtuoso: Purcell was a skilled keyboard player and composed many keyboard works, including preludes, suites, and dances. His keyboard music showcases his mastery of intricate harmonies and expressive melodies.
  7. Sacred Music: Purcell composed a substantial amount of sacred music, including anthems, hymns, and choral works. His sacred compositions demonstrate his deep understanding of text setting and his ability to evoke emotional depth.
  8. Odes for Royal Occasions: Purcell composed numerous odes for royal occasions, including the coronation of King James II and the birthday celebrations of Queen Mary. These grand works celebrated and honored the monarchy.
  9. Short Life and Legacy: Despite his significant contributions to music, Purcell’s life was cut short. He died in 1695 at the age of 36, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that continues to be celebrated and admired.
