Cathy-Di Zhang
Soprano
Award-winning Australian soprano, Cathy-Di Zhang, is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London and since returning, has made her Opera Australia debut as Micaëla in their National Tour of Carmen and her Pinchgut Opera debut as Amour/La folie in Neil Armfield’s acclaimed production of Platée by Rameau.
This season, she made her State Opera South Australia debut as Mimi in their one night spectacular Bohème on the beach at Glenelg to over 6000 people. For Opera Australia, Cathy-Di performed chamber music at Uluru and is returning on their National Tour, this time, in the role of Rosina in a new production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville by Priscilla Jackman.
Cathy-Di is very excited to be creating the role of Zhu Yingtai for The Butterfly Lovers, which also marks her company debut and at the end of the year, Cathy-Di will be returning to Pinchgut Opera in the Australian premiere of Charpentier’s Médée, performing the role of Créuse in a production by Justin Way.
Prior to the pandemic, Cathy-Di sang the role of Mädchen in K.Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny in a new production by acclaimed director Ivo van Hove for Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under Esa-Pekka Salonen and subsequently for Dutch National Opera under Markus Stenz. Other opera credits include Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), the title role of Massenet’s Cendrillon, Lauretta and Nella (Gianni Schicchi), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) and Lisa (La sonnambula).
Aside from opera, Cathy-Di has appeared as a soloist with orchestras all around Europe and China and she performs regularly in chamber music.
