Victorian Opera’s Content Producer, Evan Lawson, chats with Mert Süngü ahead of his debut performance as Prince Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola

Mert performs the role of Prince Ramiro in La Cenrentola, 10 March at Melbourne Recital Centra as part of Season 2023.
The young Turkish tenor Mert Süngü was born in Istanbul and is a highly successful singer in the belcanto and Mozart repertoire. In addition to his studies at the conservatory of the Mimar Sinan university in his hometown and the Scuola dell`Opera Italiana in Bologna he also finished several Masterclasses with great artists like Maura Trombetta, George Shirley, Luciana Serra, Stefania Bonfadelli, Sonia Prina, Alfonso Antoniozzi and Raul Gimenez as well as Stefano Giannini, Dolora Zajick, Rudolf Piernay, Edith Wiens and Francisco Araiza.
His repertoire includes roles like Ilo/ZELMIRA, Erisso/MAOMETTO II, Argirio/TANCREDI, Rossinis STABAT MATER, Tonio/LA FILLE DE RÉGIMENT, Lanciotto/FRANCESCA DA RIMINI (Mercadante), Ferrando/COSI FAN TUTTE, Don Ottavio/DON GIOVANNI, Tamino/DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Nadir/LE PÊCHEURS DE PERLES, Idreno/SEMIRAMIDE, Don Ramiro/LA CENERENTOLA or Conte Almavia/IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA.
He will open the 2022/23 season as Don Narciso in IL TURO IN ITALIA at the Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liège. His debuts in Australia and Tasmania as Don Ramiro in LA CENERENTOLA will follow. At Vienna Volksoper, he will sing DIE SCHÖPFUNG, and he also sings Eliézer in Rossini’s MOISE ET PHARAON at the Opera de Lyon and SILLA at the Rheinsberg Easter Festival.
Highlights of recent seasons include his debut as Pylade/IPHIGÉNIE EN TAURIDE in Como, Brescia and Pavia, as well as his debut in MOISE ET PHARAON at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. He s ang Alfred/DIE FLEDERMAUS at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Semperoper Dresden, Gennaro/LUCREZIA BORGIA in Toulouse, Paris/LA BELLE HELENE in Paris, Il Conte d’Almaviva/IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA in Dresden, Stuttgart , Bari and Rome and Tonio/LA FILLE DU REGIMENT in Palermo. This was followed by appearances as Tamino/DIE MAGIC FLUTE, Ernesto/DON PASQUALE and Salvini/ADELSON E SALVINI as well as Ilio/ZELMIRA and Lindoro/L`ITALIANA IN ALGERI in Sassari.
He debuted Nemorino/L’ELISIR D’AMORE and Cassio/OTELLO in Dresden, Libenskof/IL VIAGGIO A REIMS in Rome and at Bolshoi in Moscow, Percy/ANNA BOLENA at Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Raoul/LES HUGUENOTS at Grand Theater in Geneve and Norfolk/ELISABETTA REGINA D´INGHILTERRA at Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad.
His career already brought him to prestigious houses like the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Théâtre du Chatelet, the San Carlo di Napoli as well as the Innsbruck early music Festival, the Teatro dell’opera di Roma, the National Opera Montpellier an the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. He was part of the young ensemble of the Semperoper Dresden from 2012 to 2014 and has a close connection to the house since then.
During the last few years, he has been working with many great conductors like Fabio Luisi, Nello Santi, Christian Thielemann, Massimo Zanetti, Donato Renzetti, Michele Mariotti, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Diego Fasolis, Peter Schneider, Julia Jones, Alexander Joel as well as Lorenzo Viotti and Omer Meir Wellber.
