Based on the Sophocles’s tragedy about betrayal, grief and family revenge; this brilliantly complex yet astute work was written by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal at the height of their career. The story follows Elektra as she yearns to avenge the murder of her father, King Agamemnon. It’s a bold and dramatic cathartic journey that is the basis of one of the great character arcs in operatic literature, and has gone on to influence popular narrative formulas seen in blockbuster movies to theatre the world over.
Victoria Opera is honoured to host revered dramatic soprano, Catherine Foster, a veteran of Bayreuth Festival and other major opera houses across the world, as she sings the title role alongside a stellar Australian cast. Maestro Richard Mills conducts the combined forces of Orchestra Victoria and the exceptionally talented young musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music.
