Head Mechanist

Victorian Opera is seeking experienced Head Mechanist to join the company.

The Head Mechanist is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of all scenic elements of productions. This role leads the mechanist team and oversees the installation, operation, and maintenance of sets, while ensuring full compliance with safety standards. The Head Mechanist works closely with the creative team to ensure the artistic vision is realised effectively and safely.

Casual Mechanists Positions 

Victorian Opera is seeking experienced casual mechanists to join our pool of technicians for upcoming 2026 productions.

Multiple positions will be available, with successful applicants assisting with bump-ins and bump-outs, show calls, and the maintenance of scenic elements across both rehearsals and performances. Frequent locations include Melbourne CBD, Footscray and St Kilda areas.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with bump-ins and bump-outs
  • Maintenance and handling of scenic elements and/or props
  • Working collaboratively with lighting, sound, and venue teams
  • Adhering to all WHS and theatre safety standards

Desired skills and experience:

  • Previous experience as a theatre mechanist
  • Valid forklift ticket (highly desirable)
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • A high level of professionalism and attention to detail

Expressions of Interest: Technical Roles

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced Mechanists, Lighting Technicians, and Stage Managers for a range of 2026 projects in Melbourne and across Victoria. Experience with bump-ins and bump-outs will be highly regarded.

We are looking for individuals who can work effectively both as part of a team and independently, and who demonstrate strong communication skills along with solid health and safety knowledge within a theatre environment.
