In Season 2025, Victorian Opera offers a diverse program under Artistic Director Stuart Maunder AM. The year starts with a Sondheim classic never seen fully staged in Australia and works through a Mozart gem to a Janáček classic, with several stops along the way. We continue to champion new Australian work and create opportunities and create opportunities for a new generation of opera practitioners.

Follies. Australia’s first ever fully staged production of Stephen Sondheim’s most glorious musical. This performance features both Australian musical theatre royalty and emerging stars, with a Tony Award winning designer creating the exquisite set and costumes.

Mansfield Park. Intimate, Regency-era performances of marriage, manners and money. Jonathan Dove’s musical adaptation invites guests to be a fly on the wall in Jane Austen’s world of family drama, marriage negotiations, class and flirtation. This production will sparkle with style, wit and Georgian decorum.

The Lyrebird’s Voice. A family friendly opera about the power of your voice. This sweet story was developed by Peter Rutherford and six youth participants of the New Work Opera Studio 2023. Now fully developed with Librettist Jayde Kirchert, this story told with colour, Australian spirit and a big dose of humour imparts important lessons on identity and the ways in which we use our voice.

Abduction (The Abduction from the Seraglio). Almost 250 years after its Vienna debut, Mozart’s masterpiece remains as thrilling as ever. Woven between the drama of heroism and suffering are moving moments of unrequited love, unshakable loyalty and even a few laughs.

Katya Kabanova. This is opera at its most raw. Janáček’s score is famously lyrical. Inspired by Slavic folk songs, the score captures beauty and tragedy in equal measures and will remain with you long after the curtain falls.

Boojum! With dark twists and humorous turns, Boojum! blends the much-loved tale of Alice in Wonderland with Lewis Carroll’s nonsensical poem The Hunting of the Snark. Led by veteran performer David Hobson, these emerging artists get to hone their skills.
